The author of the present book, by placing the history of art in front of concepts of philosophy, linguistics, literary theory and psychoanalysis, as well as rethinking the history of art with the help of teachings derived from semiotics, seeks to overcome the isolation of art history as Academic field; a change of non-historical approach and revision of its assumptions and foundations. Through his understanding of painting as a material sign and his understanding of the act of painting and seeing as the material actions by which the process of signification in painting takes place, he reconsiders the history of painting.
Bryson also criticizes the prevailing view in the history of painting, which is formulated as the "substantive version" in connection with the "natural approach," and looks at the assumptions of formalism, and in particular the formalist analysis derived from Saussures teachings.
The reading methods and keys presented in this book change the possibility of re-reading the paintings more widely and the way some works are valued. The study of painting contains to rely on the theoretical assumption and working methods of a previous generation.
